Social Justice in Action

Living into its mission and Principles, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ogden (UUCO) promotes and encourages social action that promotes the inherent worth and dignity of each and every human being and to recognize the inherent interconnectedness we share with all creation.  As people of faith and covenant we are called to Acts of Compassion and Social Wi10828034_10152410527916470_4409048711048168061_otness. Recently these have included interfaith rallies such as Ogden’s Black Lives Matter and  “Clean Air, No Excuses” rally held at the state capital in Salt Lake City.

Other areas of social action at UUCO  include:

Welcoming and Affirming Congregation:  UUCO welcomes and affirms all who enter its doors regardless of creed, race, ethnic background, sexual orientation or gender identity.  No matter who you are, or who you love, whatever walk of life you come from  you are welcome at UUCO.

Formation of OUTreach Resource Center:  In 2004, recognizing the need to provide a safe haven for teenagers identifying as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or Queer, members of UUCO organized OUTreach Resource Center.  Organized as the first LGBTQ drop in center for teens in Utah, its services quickly grew to include a wide range of resources including services for homeless youth.  Since its inception, OUTreach has grown to include satellite centers in communities surrounding Ogden and has been a model for other resource centers for LGBTQ youth in other areas of the country.  Outgrowing the space available at UUCO, OUTreach moved to its present location at 2760 Adams Avenue as part of Youth Futures in Ogden in December 2014.   Although no longer a UUCO ministry, OUTreach will always be near and dear to the hearts of UUCO and those that demand Social Justice and a brighter future for all of our youth, whether Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or straight.

Ogden City’s Nondiscrimination Ordinances –  Members of UUCO were instrumental in efforts of advocacy and social witness that resulted in the first non-discrimination ordinances for the state of Utah.

Blue Sky Awards for Utah Renewable Energy Energy Projects:    Living in to its commitment to Environmental Justice, UUCO became the first Ogden church to participate in the Blue Sky Awards for Utah Renewable Energy.  In a very competitive bidding process, UUCO become the first church in Ogden to gain funding for placement of a solar panel array as part of the Blue Sky Awards  in December 2014.  As a result , a 27 solar panel array will be placed at UUCO in April 2015 demonstrating our commitment to energy that is affordab10923547_10152536165276470_4747134833808567865_nle, clean and renewable.

UUCO supports the Blue Sky Renewable Energy Program and encourages members and friends to learn more about and participate in the Blue Sky Program and support renewable energy projects in their communities and throughout the state.  To learn more go to https://www.rockymountainpower.net/env/bsre.html .
