Sharing for Change
Unitarian Universalist Service Committee
On April 16th, UUCO collected $337.16 to support the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) through the sharing for change program. During our earlier Guest at Your Table fundraising effort we collected $41.38 for a combined total of $378.54 for UUSC. UUSC advances human rights, fosters social justice and works toward a world free from oppression. In this time of discord and rising discrimination, UUSC’s commitment to promoting economic justice, bolstering environmental justice, and protecting rights at risk is important work in our world. We are pleased that we took this opportunity to assist and support them through our Sharing for Change collection. Your contributions to this program are a deeply powerful testament to the good we can still do and to the change we can elicit. Thank you!!
On March 19th and 26th, UUCO collected $638.26 for Planned Parenthood, one of the nation’s leading providers of high-quality, affordable health care for women, men, and young people, and the nation’s largest provider of sex education. At this time when Planned Parenthood, the health services they provide, and the well being of the people who rely on them are under attack on Federal and State levels we are pleased that we took this opportunity to assist and support them through our Sharing for Change collection.
American Civil Liberties Union
Our generosity of treasure makes a tangible difference in the world. In February, we raised $505.97 for ACLU through Sharing for Change. This modest donation will serve to continue the important work of the organization in protecting the lives of immigrants and LGTBQIA communities in particular right now.
Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
UUCO collected $792.24 during December’s Sharing for Change offering to send directly to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.
As you know, the Army Corps of Engineers have halted the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. This is an uplifting and long overdue victory for the tribe and for the land; one that came at the poignant time during their Interfaith Day of Prayer.
This is far from over, however. The corporations behind the Dakota Access Pipeline have announced their commitment to completing the project. In other words, the battle is won, but the war continues on.
As Nelson Mandela cautioned, “But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended.”
Our donation is a statement that we stand with Standing Rock for the long haul and we will continue to support the efforts to protect the land, the water, and the people.
Unitarian Universalist Service Committee
UUCO collected $438.38 during November’s Sharing for Change offering to send to the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee to strengthen efforts to support the victims of Hurricane Matthew that worsened conditions in an already struggling country. The United Nations is working to prevent cholera by providing clean water. UUSC has partners on the ground in Haiti and our collection will contribute to supporting vulnerable families. Women’s Retreat House
On October 16th, UUCO collected $644.46 for the Women’s Retreat House, an Ogden treasure and resource that offers safe housing and 12-step focused support for women struggling with drug and alcohol addiction and recovery.
The Retreat House assists resident women in becoming strong enough to face a complete lifestyle change. Here they support each other and “do the work” to break the stranglehold of addiction. We are pleased that we took this opportunity to assist and support them through our Sharing for Change collection.
Unitarian Universalist Trauma Ministry
On September 11th, UUCO collected $339.25 for the Unitarian Universalist Trauma Ministry. This ministry is a group of ministers and lay members who respond to traumas in congregations. In addition to educating individuals and congregations on responses to trauma, UUTRM provides resources – such an onsite trauma response teams or consulting – in the wake of trauma.
UUTRM is a very personal choice for our congregation, as our congregation has benefited from their consulting and education purposes in the past. When we needed them, they showed up for us and helped navigate sensitive matters, even as most of us remained unaware of their involvement. I am pleased we took this opportunity to show up for them now through our Sharing for Change collection.
Baton Rouge Flood Fund
Many people in Louisiana have begun the tremendously heavy process of rebuilding their parishes (counties) following the devastating floods this summer. On August 28th, UUCO offered our help by way of the Sharing for Change collection. We are pleased to announce we raised $944.89 for the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge Flood Fund. The money from the fund will go directly to the members and friends of the church to assist in the recovery efforts. Special attention will be paid to those families without flood insurance. For further information on the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge or for more ways to help, please visit their web page at www.peacestones.org.
Refugee Resettlement Fund
On July 3rd, UUCO participated in a joint worship service and picnic with the United Church of Christ. During that service, a collection was taken for the Refugee Resettlement Fund. We’re delighted to announce that we raised a total of $270.35. Each year, Catholic Community Services of Utah resettles 600 refugees from all around the world. Far from everything they’ve known they need more support than ever as they make their way in a new land. Click here to learn more about the fund.
Nurture the Creative Mind
During our worship service on Sunday, June 19th, we honored Beth Dion for her numerous years serving as the UUCO music director. One of the ways we honored Beth was to designate June’s Sharing for Change collection to the organization of her choice. She selected Nurture the Creative Mind, a not-for-profit organization that provides arts enrichment and empowerment for disadvantaged youth in Ogden. We’re delighted to announce that we raised $216.07.
Your Community Connection
May Sharing for Change is May 22nd. Donations will be given to Your Community Connection – a local organization that provides support for people dealing with domestic violence. Please bring your check made out to UUCO with YCC in the memo line. Credit and debit card donations will also be gratefully accepted.
We’re delighted that we raised $263.46 for HEAL Utah. HEAL Utah harnesses “the power of grassroots advocacy and smart policy research, engages in legislative and regulatory settings to champion clean air & clean energy, and protect Utah from nuclear, toxic, and dirty energy threats.” In February, UUCO voted to sign a letter of support for HEAL’s efforts to address air pollution in Utah.
UUCO raised $327.11 for Family Promise in Ogden – a new program that will provide shelter and resources to homeless families in Ogden.
